Create an edible oasis in your city home with our guide to sustainable gardening.
The Green Tube is an urban gardening and social enterprise that transforms unused or underutilized spaces within London Underground stations and other unused areas into green spaces, providing environmental, social, employment and economic benefits to the community.
Our mission involves repurposing unused spaces, such as rail stations, tube stations, and churches for example , to create sustainable environments. Specifically, within London we seek out suitable areas where we can provide employment opportunities for young individuals aged 18 to 34, with a particular focus on ex-offenders and those from Black and Caribbean backgrounds. Our aim is to utilize these spaces effectively and contribute to the growth and development of these individuals within a supportive and inclusive environment
Growing on the Underground and unused land.
The controlled environment of the London Underground makes it a unique place for urban gardening. Due to the consistent temperatures, lack of pests, and availability of artificial light, a variety of plants can thrive in these conditions.
Here are some of the plants we grow:
Hydrangeas: Known for their large and colorful blooms, hydrangeas can be successfully grown in the Underground. They need a well-draining soil and regular watering. The artificial light needs to mimic the sunlight hydrangeas usually receive, which is partial sun to partial shade.
Bay Leaves: These plants need a good amount of sunlight, which can be provided by artificial lights. Bay trees prefer well-draining soil and regular watering. They can be grown in containers, making them suitable for the Underground environment.
Sweet Peas: Sweet peas prefer cool conditions, so the Underground is ideal for them. They will need a trellis or some form of support as they tend to climb. Artificial light can be used to simulate the full sun they usually need.
Kale and Radishes: These are cool-season crops that can be grown from seeds directly sown into the soil. They prefer full sun to light shade, which can be provided through artificial light. Both kale and radishes need well-draining soil and regular watering.
Apple Trees: Dwarf or mini apple trees can be grown in the Underground. They need deep containers, well-draining soil, and full sun conditions, which can be simulated through artificial lighting. Apple trees also need good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.
Herbs: Most herbs can be easily grown in the Underground. They prefer well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade conditions. Some popular herbs to grow include basil, parsley, thyme, and rosemary.
The Benefits
Environmental Issues: Urban gardening helps in mitigating environmental issues
in several ways. By growing plants locally, we reduce the carbon emissions associated with transporting food from far-off places. Plants also absorb CO2, one of the primary greenhouse gases, thereby helping to reduce its levels in the atmosphere. Moreover, urban gardens can help cities deal with the increased risk of flooding due to climate change by acting as a sponge and absorbing rainwater.
Biodiversity: Urban gardening contributes to biodiversity by providing habitats for various species. By growing a range of plants, we can attract different types of pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. This can help in balancing the local ecosystem and creating a healthier environment.
Mental Well-being: Gardening is a therapeutic activity. It can help reduce stress, improve mood, and boost overall mental health. The process of nurturing plants and seeing them grow provides a sense of accomplishment and peace. Moreover, urban gardens can create a sense of community among city dwellers, further contributing to mental well-being.
In conclusion, urban gardening on the London Underground provides an innovative way to green our cities, combat climate change, boost biodiversity, and promote mental well-being. It's an exciting venture that holds numerous benefits for individuals and the community as a whole.
